Green Tomato Relish - Marjorie Bligh Style


So winter is here - It's bloody cold - already - Boo!!
The weather has no hope of allowing ripening of those green tomatoes still on the vines and the veggie garden needs mulching for winter. So pull those vines out and make some Green Tomato Relish - Marjorie Bligh style! With this recipe she claimes to have won a show prize - hooray! However I did have to make some alterations due lack of ingredients in the cupboard.

Green Tomato Pickles No 2
Pg 171 of Marjorie Blackwell "At Home"

Slice 6lb. green tomatoes and 3 lbs. onions, then put into a preserving pan with 2 3/4 pints vinegar, 3/4 lb. treacle, 1 tablespoon each of mustard and curry powder, 2 tablespoons salt, 1 teaspoon spice, 2 doz cloves (tied in a muslin bag), 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (small). Boil together for 1 hour, stiring occationally. Blend 2 heaped tablespoons flour with 1/4 pint vinegar, stir in pickle. Cool 5 mins then bottle.

Alterations - I run our of treacle so used what I had and added 1/2 cup of sugar extra - I used powdered cloves instead of the whole cloves, about 1 teaspoon - I used corn flour instead of plain flour. Lastly Marjorie says not to sterilise bottles in the oven (or traditional methods) but to swish vinegar around in the jar before bottling (clean jars obviously) - I guess we will wait to see how that goes.
