Pea and Ham Soup

Yes its winter in Tassie. Its almost the shortest day of the year and the stormy season has set in. Sad face. Bonuses of winter include wood fires and slow cooker recipes.
I love chucking a heap of stuff in a pot, put it on before work and coming home to tea cooked and the house smelling yum.
Last week i made the BEST soup ever in the slow cooker so i thought i would share a bit of winter love.
I threw in :
  • 1  onion
  • 2 celery sticks
  • 4 carrots
  • A bacon bone
  • 1 1/2 ltr chicken stock
  • 2 Tbs Chilli Jam
  • 1 1/2 cup split peas
  • Thyme and Oregano (least i'm pretty sure that's what i picked out of the garden)
  • Pepper to taste
I chopped  all the veggies and threw it in the slow cook for the whole day. When i got home i took out the bacon bone and blended it. Easy peasey ...right?? Oh and Yuuuuuuum. If you don't have a slow cooker you just need to soak the peas over night and cook it for two hours on the stove top.

You may have me mention "Chilli Jam" in the recipe. Asia@home used to make one that was better and more spicy than this Always Fresh one, but i still like it. I have been using it in nearly every winter recipe. It's great in curries, stews, stir fires and soups. It's amazing and you should really give it a go...seriously chuck it in everything.
