Enid Gilchrist

How can I live in Australia and be oblivious to the lovely Mrs Gilchrist? Enid is an Australian fashion designer that is famous for brining out these booklets of self drafting patterns that were very popular from the 1950 to 70's.

I found three of these books in an oppy in Leongatha for $1 each. I have found some much inspiration from just these three (and a bit of cringing I must admit). There are many versions of the self drafting books still out there. I would love to get my hands on the others. They are selling on Ebay for $12 each.

I must admit if I wasn't already a competent sewer I think these patterns would take a lot of working out. I guess back in the day of their publishing everybody sewed or had somebody in their family that sewed that they could ask. My Step Mum said that her Mum used to sew all the kids clothes and it was something pretty special to get bought clothes. This was obviously before the days of cheap mass produced China clothing.

I will be totally keeping my eyes open to fill out my collection!! Must....have...Enid.....
